Final Internship Project

UFC Bethesda-Georgetown is an organization that is made for getting people in shape and making them into fighters. The locations are in Bethesda and Georgetown and they both look exactly the same. The chain of authority goes from the owners to the employees. No one employee has rank over another. The order of employees is as follows: General Manager, head coach, and front desk/supervisor. This organization serves the community by getting people fit and in shape. There are similar sites all over the country, and UFC is one huge franchise. They aren’t different at all. They all sponsor professional fights and they all target the same thing: the owners just want to make money, but the employees want to get you in a great shape. This organization helps the community also by entertaining people who love watching UFC Mixed Martial Arts fights, by advertising for the fights and sponsoring them.  Anyone can become a member of a UFC gym. You just go up and ask to join the gym and they will sign you up for a small payment. This organization gets its funding from all of the clients that they bring in. It’s expenses include: weights, weight sets, punching bags, sparring equipment, boxing gloves, hand wraps, advertising posters and commercials, and last but not least, heating and electricity. It is a great place to go and work out or just take a class with your friends. It is a great opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. I know I have.

Some of the student I spoke to seemed to have interesting internships but none that floated my boat. Some of the more interesting ones were pretty cool sounding, such as the Smithsonian museum. The bike shop always sounds fun to work at. I also miss working at last years internship, Ginkgo Gardens. The people there were so nice to me that I would like to go visit them sometime. I bet they won’t recognize me after two years. The only other internship I found attention grabbing was a pet shelter. My very first internship was at Wag Time Too. I didn’t quite like it as much as Ginkgo Gardens but I got to at least work with dogs. The plant nursery had a cat named after the opening of the nursery. None of them are any bit the same as mine. Not even related. I have gained a lot of experience in this particular field of work, and I enjoyed it immensely. It will be very useful down the road.

At my internship, some of my weaknesses are,  cleaning the shower room is a major weakness because of all the dirt and hair. Some more weaknesses are dusting the giant fan and the metal support beams because of all the dust that rains down and activates my allergies. My strengths are vacuuming, cleaning the mirrors and weights. And also I like running errands for my supervisors. They don’t make me go to far and they never last more than 5 minutes. This works very well for me because I do not know the area very well. I could take the time to learn, but that would be time out of my internship to to that, and it would take a while. I finished my internship so that doesn’t matter anymore, but if it did then I would try to find the time to do it.

My job title is Official Custodian of the gym (not really). I clean every part of the gym and more. I don’t only do the jobs outlined in the job description. I also run errands, take out the trash, watch the front desk when other employees are on their break and help with the clients. The only thing I don’t do is answer the phone when it rings. Either someone else gets it, or we let it go straight to message. I also sometimes help out with pro cleaning companies that come in and clean. They have shifts that they take every day. One employee in always in the gym at all times. I’m always in the gym no matter what, unless I’m taking my break to go to Starbucks. At my old internship at Ginkgo Gardens, I used to work from 1:00 to 4:00. Now I work from 1:00 to 6:00. I also just work out for two hours after I’m done working. They let me free wander for a few minutes before getting started with my work for the day.

If I were the boss at my internship I would keep everything the way it is. I like everything where it is at the moment. I do wish that the space would be bigger and taller with a table behind the front desk. I would not fire anyone just for not showing up a day because I believe in second chances. I intern at a gym, but I plan to join the US Marine Corps after college.  The thing most attractive to me about being in the marines is being a sniper. I have wanted to be a sniper ever since I read American Sniper by Chris Kyle-Navy SEAL sniper. After the Corps I plan on going into counter terrorism. Mostly because we could use a lot more of it. Qualities that I admire in my boss include, leadership, skills in business, and authority.
